Amidst the kissing and ‘pressing’ Miss Walker had mumbled something about Anne being infatuated with her, and that when the novelty wore off she would soon forget her. ‘Waived all this’, wrote Anne, determining to reject any coquettishness on Miss Walker’s part. Lidgate was cosy, intimate and far enough from the surrounding Walker properties for the two women to feel safe from interruption. As darkness fell outside, the two women took advantage of the dimming light:
